“Hollywood loves Boston, and it’s a love affair that’s been going on for many years,” WBZ’s Jon Keller wrote back in February.
More recently, that very obsession with the Hub has shifted towards reality TV, now heavily tuned into Boston. Shows like Wicked Single, Southie Rules and Boston’s Finest all debuted on television in recent months, but never have two reality stars epitomized the city of Boston better than Aly Raisman and Angie Miller, let alone having done it at the exact same time.
Aly Raisman’s story is already well known. The Needham native captained the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team to gold medals at the 2012 London Games, catapulting the “Fierce 5″ into overnight sensations with Corn Flakes endorsements and the like. Aly’s celebrity rose to new heights on the latest season of Dancing With The Stars, which ended in a 4th place finish. Aly was a fan favorite throughout the show, and even though she wasn’t the best dancer, you saw her improve dramatically after each and every criticism.
For Angie Miller, the 19-year-old from Beverly garnered a loyal fan base week after week on this past season of American Idol, ultimately placing 3rd (even though many believe she should’ve won). In the first Idol episode since the April attack on Boston, Miller delivered a heartfelt tribute to the city, performing “I’ll Stand By You” for all the world to see.
Two girls from Greater Boston. Both with otherworldly talent, showcasing the heart of a city for all to see. We may not always come out on top, but through hard work, character and determination you’re left with no choice but to respect us. Aly and Angie have earned that respect.
